at christmas (well, festivus really...) my mom roasted the turkey in a paper bag because apparently that's what kids are doing these days. she was so excited! no really. the over/under count on the number of times she mentioned the paper bag that day was 7.5 and over won by a large margin.
it worked okay, i guess. the turkey was moist and juicy but not really that delicious (the words "plain and bland" were uttered by dad)
fastforward selector to last weekend. we had bought two packages of turkey drumsticks (i felt very renaissance-fair-y) and i wasn't quite sure what to do with them. "paper bag!!!" was bandied about, and somehow i got conned into replicated the festivus experience. sadly, i have no paperbags. i always bring my own cloth bags to the grocery store, like a good little treehugger. and they don't really give out paper bags here anyway - except at the lcbo and i don't exactly shop there every day. so. no paper bags.
i sat on my bed, feeling kind of sad (i'm not sure why. i could have just made a foil tent and it would have worked perfectly), when i looked up at my bookshelf and saw a stack of brown paper envelopes that were just big enough to contain four drumsticks. so i did it (mostly for the purpose of this blog). i wet the envelope down. salted and peppered the legs, and stuck them in the oven at 325• (you have to keep it under 450, because that's when the paper starts to burn...)
how did they turn out? they were moist and juicy, but the taste.... yeah you guessed it. plain and bland. next time (if there ever is a next time. i don't know if i'm really cut out for renaissance fair food) i will go CRAZY with the herbs and seasonings. salt and pepper just doesn't cut it.
