cake and ice cream!

on friday afternoon, while sitting in my green fake leather armchair in the coffeeshop, madly studying for my art song exam, i was attacked by a craving for ice cream and cake. there is a certain kind of sugar rush that only cake and ice cream can sate and that is what i had to have.
i could have probably found something at school to eat right away - or even the grocery store when we went shopping later that evening. but that wouldn't do. i had to do it up right.
1) cake
i did use a bettye crocker box (gasp! i know. but they were on sale for 99 cents. and they really do cut down on time, which is important given that i'm in the middle of my last set of undergrad exams. and i kind of need to study). it was devil's food. i used half and half instead of the water specified on the box. this made for an extra delicious, moist and rich cake. (i don't cut corners on my cake and ice cream). i made two 8" rounds.

2) frosting
i had a tub of matching bettye crocker frosting, but that just wouldn't do. fortuitously, at the grocery store on friday night, i had remembered to pick up some heavy cream. so i could make the ganache frosting from here. i skipped the corn syrup, extra sugar and butter because that isn't necessary. i made extra. i also used 1/3 86% cocoa superdark chocolate and 2/3 regular semisweet chips.

3) the ice cream
i had been dying to try david's goat cheese ice cream for ages. goat cheese was on sale two weeks ago, so i bought some with the intention of trying out the recipe. school got in the way and two weeks passed before i could get my eggs cracking. for the first time ever, i stopped cooking the custard *before* the eggs started to curdle! and then i poured the hot eggs and half/half (which i used instead of the recommended whole milk, which i didn't have...) over my crumbled cheese, to make for a super smooth and creamy with just the right amount of tang custard. after a whirl in the ice cream maker, i knew i had a winner that would go perfectly with my super chocolate chocolate cake.
it did.
