so earth hour last night ended up being pretty fun. first we had the intended wake up call - how tied to using energy our lives are. when that fear/embarrassment wore off, i played a little guitar while it was still light out. sadly the city of waterloo wasn't participating so all the streetlights were still on. i don't know any songs by memory, so it wound up being a series of chords trying to be a song. then i voiced my concern that we had no candles... what would we do in an actual blackout situation? well. all it took was a little disobeying the warning labels on the bottle. we had a few small fires in glasses filled with isopropyl alcohol. the coolest (and the one i wished i had taken a picture of) was the pie plate filled with water and floating blobs of hand sanitizer. we lit the blobs with some matches and they glowed blue as they morphed around the plate. apparently hand sanitizer is a pyromaniac's dream. we stopped before things started to get dangerous. then we just sat on the couch and talked. it was the good kind of conversation. the kind i imagine more people had before tv.
i think there should be monthly earth hours, not just to save energy, but to remind people how nice the quiet dark is.
sadly, our roommate refused to participate. there was a hockey game on and he said that he heard david suzuki said that it wasn't a big deal if you didn't turn off the tv/lights. whatever.
